Motivation
WHAT IS MOTIVATION?
The direction and intensity of effort
Direction – where/ what type of situation the individual’s energies are directed towards
Intensity – hoe much effort is put forth in a particular situation
Relationship between the two: Hard to separate… usually effort is most intense in the areas in which it is directed – EX.. if you have a strong desire to play a particular sport, (direction) you will likely put a good deal of effort into playing/ improving
Effects –
Choice of activity
Effort to pursue goals
Intensity of effort toward goals
Persistence in face of difficulty/ failure
Problems with this vague definition:
Can be used in these following ways:
Personality characteristics – she’s a highly motivated individual
External influence – I need something to get me motivated
As an explanation/ consequence for behavior – I wanted it too much/ I wasn’t motivated
WHAT PROBLEMS CAN THIS CAUSE?
Coach and players differ in their definition
VIEWS OF MOTIVATION
Trait Centered: (participant centered) – motivation as a function of individual characteristics (personality, needs, goals, etc. determine motivation)
2
Situation Centered: motivation determined mainly by situation
Interaction View: both individual and characteristics and situation interact to determine motivation
- Ideal way is to analyze and respond to personality and the interaction between personal and situational characteristics – motives for participation change over time, so must to continue to monitor this
GUIDELINES FOR BUILDING MOTIVATION
1: Both situations and traits motivate people.
Be sure not to focus solely on one or the other, as both have the potential for affecting motivation
2: People have multiple motives for involvement – how to understand -
Why do people participate in physical activity: (Kids = improving skills, fun, social with friends, thrills and excitement, Adults = health, weight loss, fitness, self-challenge, feeling better)
People participate for more than one reason – impossible to isolate one reason most likely (extreme situations – injury rehab)
People have competing motives for involvement – (conflict of interest) – do I practice or write my paper – write paper or go drink some beers – affects participation
People have both shared and unique motives – shared (similar to others) unique (particular to the individual):
Determining motives of your athletes:
Observation – what they like and don’t like about activity
Talk to friends or teammates – what does that person like/ why participating
Ask them
Motives change over time – reasons for beginning may be different than reasons for staying/ etc.
3: Change the environment to enhance motivation – structure teaching and coaching
